10 KEYS TO WRITING
A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS BOOK

Key # 1
OUTLINE YOUR BOOK

I cannot emphasize the importance of making a tentative outline about your book before you begin. If it were a novel or a children’s book, I might think differently. But a book about your business needs to be carefully formulated in the beginning. It is actually an act of marketing in which there is typically a desire on the reader’s behalf about who you are, the way your business works, the product or services you offer and the benefits he will derive from the few hours he might spend with your book.

Key # 2
KNOW YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE

Whether the book is to reach your best prospective clients or to re-enforce your value with your existing clients, you should think carefully about the best way to approach them. Some business have very diverse clients but they need a specific things from you and some businesses have clients that fall into more discernable categories. Sometimes both. whatever the case, you need to think carefully about what you write and what you don’t write .

Key # 3
SHOULD YOU WRITE ABOUT YOURSELF?

Sure. This should be a like an “About Us” page on a business website. It should be fairly concise and definitely oriented about your background, your family and your growth into and with your business. This should be personalized and I guess not much more than 15% of your book. How and why you started this business is key. And don’t be afraid of interesting anecdotes Sometimes with quotes.

Key # 4
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND DEDICATIONS

A lot of people are going to see your book. And Anyone- whether family members or business Associates or clients who have inspired this Book should be mentioned. Sometimes a Dedication Page is separate- but keep your Acknowledgement Page short but very Complementary.

Key # 5
THE PROLOGUE PAGE

The Prologue Page should be fairly short. It it should often be the page where you say why you are writing about the book and the benefits it could have for the readers. It might have some autobiographical content but just enough to show how you learned the value of what you are now doing.

Key # 6
WRITE AN EFFICIENT BUT INTERESTING TABLE OF CONTENTS

The Prologue Page and the Table of Content Page are really advertisements for the book Itself. They may actually influence whether the prospective reader will want to continue reading it or just put it on the desk with his or her semi-discarded business cards (which they will never look at but are somewhat embarrassed to throw out.

Key # 7
HOW TO USE AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL MATERIAL – IN A BUSINESS BOOK

It would be nice if the entire book could be Like an intriguing adventure story with you as the hero and the business details thrown in as an aside to be assimilated quite easily. And if indeed your business was about guiding people through a photographic safari In an African country, you might be able to or a talent agent presenting her fascinating experience in successfully preparing and guiding her clients’ into their desired movie careers. But in some cases, your readers are more Interested in the bottom line of your product and its value for them.

Key # 8
ACTUAL CHAPTERS CONTENT

So you need to compose your chapters with the essential information that will motivate your clients to keep read your book if you are a lawyer specializing in certain types of cases, you may break it down into a series of chapters focusing on those cases- with a short summary of each chapter. If you are a manufacturer, many of the chapters may illustrate the stages of manufacturing, the cost of the process and how your final product will have various benefits for the buyer (your client). Everything here should summarize what your reader would be interested in.

Key # 9
HOW LONG SHOULD YOUR BOOK BE?

Your book should be definite but interesting and guided towards whatever you think your reader wants to know. But, in this kind of a book, it should also be concise. Stories and descriptions should say exactly what you need to say but there should be an emphasis on being concise. Maybe your book should be something like 75 to 100 single-spaced page, comparable to a font like Times Roman 12- but there is no fixed rule- except you should say whatever you want your reader to know and it should be concise.

Key # 10
CAN YOU USE YOUR BOOK TO
SELL YOUR BUSINESS?

This can be done- but often your book will primarily devoted to getting new clients or reinforcing relationships with existing clients. You don’t want to give the impression you are immediately desirous of getting out of it. Now sometimes, if you own a business that promotes franchises or directly sells a certain type of product that you manufacture, you could bring some sales statistics about your business- or how, through certain proprietary methods of manufacturing, brought down the costs of your products which influenced you continuing success in marketing these products.
